Ask the Designers: Storage Solutions
February 2024

Quiet luxury and the up-and-coming minimaluxe design trend are just two of the aesthetics that embody the sophistication and elegance that come from high end, minimalist designs. In general, designs where everything looks intentional and has its place tend to look more luxurious and have an enviable sophistication to them. However, there are many areas in the home that seem to attract clutter. The living room, full of remotes, newspapers, and blankets all around. In the kid’s bedroom, toys and clothes are strewn about. Outwear, shoes and bags fill up the mudroom room and entryway. We accumulate many things, and soon our spaces are overrun with evidence of our busy lives. Finding a way to keep on top of all the clutter, and keep your home looking clean and sophisticated is a common challenge.
Whether it’s in the bedroom, living room, mud room or other areas of the home, implementing storage solutions that are both functional and stylish can make all the difference. In the living room having square storage ottomans and storage coffee tables allow for nice design and extra storage options. For the kids room, using bedroom storage furniture and storage shelves with baskets makes clean up time a simple and organized process. In the entryway and mudroom storage benches and side cabinets are slick for a dual purpose of style and convenient organization. For more high-end storage solution ideas, we asked our designers for their tips and tricks for keeping clutter at bay in their home.

Answer:
Clutter is just not my thing. I love built-ins with lots of drawers, partitions for pens, stamps, envelopes, etc. The functionality of built-ins can reduce everyday clutter and be used for displaying objet d'art. Use a less-is-more concept when decorating and placing things on top of tables, chests and built-ins.

Answer:
I believe in a ‘mise en place’ philosophy - which refers to putting everything in its proper place. This is easy to accomplish when you have the right furnishings and accent pieces. For instance, chests and occasional tables with drawers, and cabinets with shelves behind doors are ideal for housing everyday items that can be pulled out when needed and tucked away when not.
